Are your team members truly being ‘resistant,’ or do they have valid concerns that deserve attention?

In many organisations, it’s common to hear the term “resistant” used to describe employees who challenge new initiatives or changes.

However, I find that this label can be quite tone-deaf and counterproductive.

Rather than viewing resistance as a problem to be overcome, we should recognise that it often stems from genuine and valid concerns.

I believe most people come to work with the intention of doing a good job, and their feedback and reluctance can offer valuable insights.

When we label someone as “resistant,” we risk overlooking the real issues that need addressing.

As Leaders, it’s crucial to approach these situations with an open mind and a willingness to listen. By engaging in meaningful dialogue and understanding the root causes of concerns, we can address them constructively and foster a more inclusive and collaborative work environment.

If you find yourself labelling people as “resistant” I encourage you to shift that perspective.

After all, isn’t it through understanding and addressing legitimate concerns that we build stronger, more resilient teams?

Unpopular opinion, but ‘perfectionism’ should not be worn as a badge of honour—it’s a barrier to growth and well-being.

Over-identifying with being a perfectionist can trap us in a cycle of unattainable standards and constant dissatisfaction.

It actually keeps us from connecting with others and even ourselves.

And while personally, I doubt I’ll ever completely kick it, I’ve definitely noticed it’s less of a problem than before.

What really pushed me to deal with my perfectionism was realising that if I didn’t work on it, I’d probably pass that same critical voice down to my kids or to the people I lead. The way we talk to ourselves affects how we talk to others.

When we hold ourselves to crazy-high standards, we often expect the same from those around us. This can trap everyone in a cycle of never feeling good enough.

I don’t want that for myself or for anyone around me.

So, I’ve been challenging my own unrealistic expectations, practicing self-compassion, and trying to have a healthier attitude towards both success and failure.

My new motto? “Progress, not perfection.”

Because frankly I don’t want a one-way ticket to burnout.

There’s always a moment with a new coaching clie

There’s always a moment with a new coaching client when I sense it’s time to take a small risk—whether that means revealing a deeper observation about them or sharing something vulnerable and authentic about myself, including my mistakes and weaknesses. In that moment, something shifts in them, and they allow themselves to be truly seen.

There we are, two humans, trying our best, with our pasts, our hurts, and our dreams all laid bare between us.

It’s the Magic Moment.

It’s the moment when everything changes. Any sludge melts away. They’re ready. It’s time.

It’s a raw and special moment.

The second moment comes when they realise the only thing in their way is themselves.

It happened yesterday. I’m working with a client who has been working hard—reflecting on things he’s probably avoided his whole life, letting himself see blind spots. He’s seeing how, while some of his beliefs and behaviours have made him incredibly successful, they’re now getting in his way.

The roles he believes he needs to play—perfect partner, perfect parent, perfect leader—are where the challenge lies.

At the end of the session, I told him how well he is doing, and that I can see how far his thinking has shifted.

He can see it too, of course; he feels better.

The things that had him stuck, frustrated, and confused, the fear he felt, are easing. He’s back in the driver’s seat.

So often, my clients don’t realise how much they have unlocked until they take a moment to look back. As a coach, I am in the privileged position of walking beside them, and helping them see what they otherwise might not.

And sometimes that’s all we need. That person walking beside us, reminding us of how far we’ve come, and how much we’ve grown.

What a lovely birthday weekend I’ve just had! Th

What a lovely birthday weekend I’ve just had! The sun was shining brightly on Saturday, setting the perfect tone for a day full of warmth and joy. I felt so connected and uplifted, and it gave me a chance to reflect on my journey.

Taking stock of how far I’ve come and recognising the growth I’ve achieved felt quite profound. I suppose that’s the thing about birthdays!??! They make you think!

Life hasn’t always been easy for me, even though I try to face each day with a smile. There have been plenty of challenges along the way, but as I get older, I’m learning to appreciate and give thanks for every single day I have. Because I am truly so lucky in many ways.

In some ways, my life is better than I could have imagined, and in other ways, it’s nothing like I would have thought or wanted.

But that’s just the game of life—the wheel keeps spinning, and we have no choice but to keep playing, and honestly I don’t know if I’d change anything anyway?!

This weekend was a beautiful reminder of the progress I’ve made and the strength I’ve found through it all. I am truly so grateful to be where I am right now and also looking forward to so many exciting things in the future!
